Giving Back to the Community – Forgiving Family Medical Debt

58.5% of bankruptcies in the United States cite medical debt as a significant contributing factor. And with millions of American families struggling to meet ends meet, and with trust in intuitions and the rule of law at an all-time low, HLG felt it was time to move the needle in the other direction in a more direction fashion.

This is the story of how Clio has changed us.

Law On the Street (L.O.T.S)

What the world needs is hope and human connection through storytelling. LOTS is a social media project where HLG team members interview Seattle community members about their hopes, dreams, and aspirations.

For every subject we interview, Hemmat Law works to buy up bundles of old medical debt held by Washington families and children. Rather than suing the debtors our team instead forgives the balances completely – without tax consequences for the families involved.

So many have lost hope for the future of their communities. While Hemmat Law cannot stop that trend, we can do our best to minimize suffering in our community. It is our responsibility as legal practitioners to use our powers for good.

Business Subscription Model:

Family law is a personally devastating endeavor. For businesses, a divorce or personal safety crisis can mean the effective loss of top performers – for weeks or even months. This could represent hundreds of thousands in lost revenue for the employer.

At the same time, the affordability crisis for legal representation has never been worse – with the average divorce costing $12k – $17k. This figure simply isn’t feasible for the vast majority of the population.

So, we came up with a solution:

Businesses can sign up to protect their employees with a flat monthly fee, and in return we heavily discount our fees should their employees ever need us.

We are the first high conflict family law firm on the West Coast to bring the subscription model into our practice in such a big way.

Educating the Public

Lawyers are failing the public. Too often, clients lack basic institutional knowledge essential to hiring a lawyer, and (in our jurisdiction) too many lawyers exploit that knowledge to get away with behavior they otherwise wouldn’t be able to.

This knowledge leaves too many hiring ineffectual representation because they do not know what to look for. At the same time, clients often have unreasonable expectations of their attorneys because they simply do not understand the basics of how the legal system operates.

At HLG, we believe it is our essential job to be stellar legal communicators. Learn more about how we’ve done that in a big way.

Education About Hiring An Attorney

At Hemmat Law, about 1/4 of our website is dedicated to educating clients about how to hire or fire any attorney. Further, we explain the differences between different fee structures, trust deposit and billing norms, how to communicate with your legal team, and what you should look for when hiring an advocate.

Education About Common Motions

Education About Common Motions

To help Pro Se litigants and current clients, Hemmat Law has also put significant emphasis on equipping as many members of the public as possible with the knowledge they need to interpret their case as they navigate it.

Education is a vital privilege. Knowledgeable clients both keep communications and expectations smooth, but it also helps the public fire bad practitioners before they irreparably damage their interests.

Mental Health Support:

The legal system is stressful, and most legal teams are completely unequipped to ease the suffering of the clients they serve. At the same time, clients in family law cases are in constant personal crisis with no way to afford mental healthcare. We fixed that.

At Hemmat Law, we have a dedicated team of legally focused strategists and life coaches baked right into our core service offerings.
